What is a private investigator allowed to do?
A Private Investigator, or Private Detective, is certified by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services. This certification, a private investigator requirement, gives the agent the authorization to perform services for their client that are considered illegal to perform without these DCJS credientials.
If a civilian were to perform surveillance on an individual, it is considered stalking. A civilian does not have access to records or information about an individual or business that a registered private investigator would have. In addition, PI’s are trained in the skills necessary to locate and utilize this information to benefit their client.
